From assistant to active participant
Earlier versions of Copilot focused mainly on helping you:
- Draft emails
- Summarise documents
- Create presentations
- Find information
Useful, time-saving features, but you still had to guide each step.
Now, Copilot is starting to take on more responsibility within your workflows.
One of the biggest changes is the ability to create your own AI agents inside Microsoft 365.
These task-focused assistants can follow rules, handle repetitive processes and carry out actions with less input from you.
Think routine admin, organising documents or supporting internal processes.
Copilot gets more context
Copilot’s chat experience is also becoming more capable.
You can make changes to documents, emails, spreadsheets and presentations directly from a conversation, rather than switching between different screens.
Microsoft is also introducing Work IQ, which helps Copilot understand your business context.
By using your organisation’s data, communications and internal content, it aims to provide more relevant and tailored responses.
Microsoft is also expanding the AI models Copilot can use, giving it access to technology from different providers. The result should be a more flexible and capable Copilot over time.
What’s coming next?
Keep an eye on Copilot Coworker, which is currently being tested.
It takes AI agents a step further, allowing them to handle longer, multi-step processes rather than responding to a single request.
Instead of asking Copilot to complete one task, you could assign a more involved process and let it work through it.
That brings huge potential – but also raises important questions around security, governance and control.
Microsoft is therefore introducing tools to help businesses see what agents are doing, how they’re being used and how they connect to wider systems.
The more capable Copilot becomes, the more important it is to make sure it’s being used safely and appropriately.
