Peer learning programmes have proved to be extremely effective and this group for new and junior managers has been incredibly well received in the past.  Its action learning programme is now open for booking, with the group starting on 12th January.

What is it?
Louise Rushworth, who organises peer groups in Cambridge Network’s Learning Collaboration, explains: “The programme starts with a one-day intensive workshop, followed by three short peer learning sessions over the course of five months, with another one-day intensive workshop mid-way through.

“The monthly half-day sessions address the real issues, challenges and opportunities encountered by participants.  Delegates benefit from hearing guest speakers, participating in round table discussions and book reviews, as well as visits to member organisations.

“Agendas are always set in consultation with group members and sessions are facilitated by a very experienced management coach, Des Williams of Development Group International, who has himself worked in industry and also had a very successful career in learning and development.”

The strength of having no rigid schedule means that topics covered are chosen by the participants and are therefore timely and relevant.  Topics have included:

  • Performance management
  • Managing staff on probation
  • How to conduct one-to-one meetings
  • Recruitment and on-boarding best practice
  • Employment law for new managers
  • Personal development
  • Working with and managing very intelligent people.

A previous group member commented:I have found the New Managers Group meetings not only enjoyable, but incredibly useful, and that’s quite a rare thing.”

The New Managers’ Group is aimed at emerging managers and those about to embark on management roles; people who are keen to explore and develop their all-round leadership performance and complements existing training programmes to embed skills.

Louise adds: “We want to create a high-energy group that will bring together individuals from different organisations and business sectors to work collaboratively and reflect the knowledge, skills and behaviours they need to manage direct reports effectively. The group is open to all sectors of business.

“Ideally, participants will already be in a role requiring them to manage others, and they should be prepared to commit to the group for every session as far as possible.”

Fees for the New Managers’ peer learning group are £850 + VAT per person per programme.
