Be social. Be shareable

Spirus continues on from last week’s blog on the importance of being visual on social media, looking at how being ‘shareable’ is a further step to social media success.

Spirus writes:

Visual content creates emotion which is more likely to get people to share. In fact, if you want to play it safe, apparently cats on skateboards have the highest click/share rates (we didn’t have an image of this but we do have one of a fresh strawberry cream cake with an interested dog!). Of course, there’s so much more to it and this blog should help to understand how to make content shareable!

Firstly, people like good news! Keep track of positive and exciting news and share it! It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day tasks but take stock of those moments and share it with your followers; it’s also a chance to enjoy the news with colleagues and make them feel valued.

Secondly, make your content reactive. It’s great to write about big events and dates that are scheduled (for example, Black Friday!) but even better to be reactive to something unexpected. Has something unscheduled happened during a sports game or a popular live TV show? React to it & get involved with the conversation online! The wittier the better, and a video/image to accompany it is great too.

Another tip would be the use of a snappy headline or initial opening sentence to really draw the reader in. Again, play on emotions, whatever ones they may be. Buzzfeed gets a bit of a reputation for ‘clickbait’ style headlines sometimes but they are effective in attracting a lot of clicks and shares amongst friends.

Create controversy. Two key factors will play a part in getting your content shared and that’s whether readers ‘love’ or ‘hate’ what you’re saying. Say something that your readers won’t necessarily expect from you; it doesn’t need to offend but write about a personal passion. That will come through in your content and whether people agree or disagree, it will be commented on and shared which is what you want.

Design – be visual! You can see our previous blog post if you haven’t already, here.
