The team, which is part of the Planning Division and based between Cambridge and London, provides a wide range of expertise relating to historic buildings and areas as well as research and design advice.
Chris Surfleet, who has a wealth of experience in this field heads up the team, and has recently taken on new appointments Lucy Denton and Fiona MacAdie.
Lucy is a historic buildings research specialist with nearly 20 years’ experience working in the heritage arts and media sectors. She specialises in the meticulous research and in-depth investigation of evidence in relation to historic buildings, their decorative schemes and collections.
Lucy, an Associate, has worked on a diverse range of projects in both the public and private sectors from one of Europe’s largest country houses to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford.
She has also made several discoveries and uncovered evidence, which have led to the revaluation of buildings and the architectural attributions, including an early 18th century manor house with connections to Sir Isaac Newton.
Lucy said: “I’m so pleased to be joining the Bidwells team. As part of a long-established and respected business, the heritage team can really add value to existing services – as well as developing new clients and opportunities.“
Fiona is an Associate and a full member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation, with more than ten years’ experience advising on heritage matters relating to the built environment within the public and private sectors, including a number of years in Westminster City Council’s Design & Conservation Team.
She has worked on an array of high-profile projects including 46 Berkeley Square, a Grade I listed townhouse located within the Mayfair Conservation Area and properties within the Chelsea Conservation Area.
Her role includes assisting clients and colleagues in resolving their heritage-related development opportunities. She prepares Heritage Statements to accompany planning applications, and provides support and guidance to clients throughout the planning process.
Fiona added: “I’m really excited to join the Heritage Team and I am enjoying working on current schemes involving a range of heritage assets from Grade I listed townhouses to farm-buildings or chapel ruins. I look forward to expanding our services across the company.”
Chris said: “Lucy and Fiona bring with them a wealth of specialist experience in the heritage sector. “Good heritage advice is essential when securing a viable planning consent.
“We are delighted that they have both joined and their roles will help further strengthen our growing Heritage team. Between us all, the team has worked on projects in the commercial, rural, planning, transport, residential, education and retail sectors across the UK.

Kate Hannelly is the fourth member of the team and she joined with Chris in March this year.
The services provided by the team will include: Significance Assessments, Heritage Impact Assessments, Heritage Statements, Townscape Appraisals, Conservation Management Plans, Setting Impact Assessments, Advice on alterations and extensions to heritage assets, Design advice in relation to Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas, Design & Access Statements in relation to heritage assets, Conservation Area Appraisals, and Expert Witness.
