Business agility - why a bike is faster than a Ferrari

If you want to get somewhere fast, which would you prefer? A Ferrari or a bike? Sounds obvious doesn’t it? Take the Ferrari. But you’d be wrong. As this short story on business agility explains.

Ferrari and bicycle

Chris Dunn Consulting writes:

How can a bike beat a Ferrari?

Firstly, there’s a long waiting list for your Ferrari. It could be months or maybe even years before you get started.

Secondly, there won’t be a smooth road to drive it on because today’s business terrain is volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (vuca)

Thirdly, you may not yet have the skills to drive it at speed. Who wants to crash and burn?

That’s why it pays to get on your bike.

You can get going straight away.

If you fall off, you can get back on again.

And once you’re going, you can figure out how to go faster.

I once joined a large business making large losses. We couldn’t afford a Ferrari. All we had was a bike.

Here’s the story of how we started with a bike and ended up with a sportscar - aka how we went from a £15 million loss to a £30 million profit.

For us, becoming more agile was a matter of survival.

That may be true of your business as you battle to weather the COVID crisis.

One thing is for sure: Agile business is smart business.
