He said: "As the holiday season beds down, the UK’s manufacturing sector continues to demonstrate growth and expansion, taking advantage of increasing export opportunities. Production has increased for the 12th month straight and overseas demand rose at the second strongest rate in the series’ history.

"UK manufacturers are exporting more and those who were not previously are taking advantage of the competitiveness that the weaker pound offers in global markets. This is great news for the continued resilience of the sector as the Brexit negotiations go on - and it’s essential we continue to support an environment where UK manufacturing is competitive worldwide. We should be proud of the positive effect that manufacturing is having on the UK’s economy, but it will be worthwhile revisiting plans to maintain this level of success once the holiday season is over."
