How to avoid work interrupting your holiday

For a stress-free, uninterrupted holiday, try a favourite communication trick: Signposting...

A beautiful beach at sunset

You deserve a break, you need a rest, which means you don't want your precious time off interrupted by annoying work.

So this is how to enjoy a stress free hols, without calls, emails and other irritants from bosses, staff or colleagues.

With all due fanfare, I can highly recommend the fine art of signposting.

.

Signposting does exactly what it suggests.

Makes it very clear, via a big, obvious signpost…

That something important is coming.

In this case, your time off.

So you won’t be around to answer questions, respond to emails, or deal with issues.

.

Here’s an example of the power of signposting:

Last week I had a big online meeting, but I was also expecting a delivery.

Rather than break the flow of the meeting, damage the rapport, and risk appearing unprofessional, I made a joke at the beginning.

- Isn’t it funny how deliveries always arrive at the most inconvenient moments?

.

Halfway through the meeting came the inevitable knock at the door and I had to get up.

But because I’d signposted the issue, the only reaction was chuckling.

Plus amused questions about what I’d received when I returned.

(A new jacket, by the way.)

In other words, the problem was defused. All thanks to signposting.

.

So, if you signpost your break clearly and early to customers, colleagues, and bosses…

They’re far more likely to remember it and respect it.
