How local leaders are developing the skills they need to scale up business

A dozen Cambridge business leaders have reached the halfway mark in the first ever Cambridge Network School for Scale-Ups, reporting that they are using the skills they've learned and making good use of the connections they have made. Invitations are now going out for a second cohort, with an imminent start.

The current group brings together a range of industry sectors, including small companies which have ambitious plans for growth and some established but high-growth Cambridge businesses, including Horizon Discovery, Raspberry Pi, JDR,  ieso digital health and Babraham Biosciences.  All participants have praised the approach, saying that they value the tailored training as well as the opportunity to make connections with other people in similar situations and people who’ve been through it before. Of particular use is enhanced understanding of the psychology of organisations and the make-up of top-performing teams, as well as subjects such as project leadership and negotiating.

Claire Ruskin, Cambridge Network's CEO, says: "One of the big surprises is that we think we know ourselves and how we work with teams. But it is a revelation to understand the reality of our impact on our team and the market, and the knock-on effect of our blind side on communication and sales."

Watch a video of Liz Upton, co-founder of Raspberry Pi and part of the current cohort, speaking about her experiences of the School for Scale-Ups so far.

The School for Scale-Ups programme brings together, in a single package,  tailor-made versions of a range of tried-and-tested courses Cambridge Network's Learning Collaboration has been offering successful companies such as ARM and CSR over the past decade as they have grown from small to giant.  It has been designed for leaders of businesses who can see their path from start-up to scale-up, for individuals who want to play a strategic part in the evolution of their company, and for those identified as potential successors in team leadership roles.

Delegates get together for a day every six weeks to complete modules that make up their basic programme, adding others as options to broaden their understanding and practical skills.  Each peer group meets for over a year.
