The importance of social media – can your company afford to be without it?

There was a time when social media was viewed with trepidation by some companies, yet it now seems we have moved into an era where most companies cannot live without it! Back in 2010 only 35% of businesses used social media and 60% of those businesses did not have a strategy in place - whereas now 90% of businesses use social media as part of their marketing strategy.

Cambridge-based marketing recruitment agency Brand Recruitment has seen an increase in employers recruiting for Social Media Managers and Assistants. Social media is a bonus for businesses when the right strategy is put in place to ensure that new likes, follows and comments turn into customer engagement which can lead to an increase in sales. This is why there has been an increase in demand for Social Media Managers and Assistants - to create a strategy that is relevant to their company.

Many companies now use Twitter and Facebook to engage with their customers and some even use it as their sole customer service function. However, social media could be seen to pose a threat to companies when the voice of the company is left in the hands of its employees. Social media is great in that it gives people a voice, yet this is also the potential root of problems.

There are potentially huge risks to trusting employees with social media as illustrated by the recent scandal when HMV’s twitter was hijacked by a member of staff who announced the news that there was a mass firing going on to its 60,000 followers.

However, by creating a social media policy and by hiring the right social media staff, employers can be sure that their new hires are not going to damage the brand in any way including the social media content that is dissipated by them.

It can be argued that if employees can be trusted to communicate freely over email and on the phone surely they should be given the same freedom to communicate over social media. As long as clear policies and boundaries are created for employees by the employers both parties can be confident that the content being released is appropriate. By setting guidelines the company can be reassured that they are being represented the right way through social media.

Social Media is a low cost strategy that can generate new business; although initially it may take time to see any results, the potential long-term contribution it can make to sales and buy-in are too great to ignore.

Since social media is evolving rapidly companies must be flexible and able to constantly monitor and measure activity to adapt their strategies accordingly. The difference an experienced social media marketer can make to any campaign or strategy is massive, and ‘home-made’ campaigns are often underwhelming at best, a complete waste of time at worst.
