Kae’s courtyard offers an oasis of calm for patients

A new courtyard garden has been opened at Cambridge University Hospitals for patients recovering from stroke.

Kae’s Courtyard Garden is a pretty, four walled sun-trap, comprising a collection of plants, flowers, shrubs and garden furniture. It can be found between wards R2 and the Lewin Rehabilitation Unit.

Senior Clinical nurse, Caroline Parr said “We hope patients will be able to relax in the peace and quiet provided by this lovely garden. It really is beautiful and I’m sure will give a lot of joy to the people who use it.”

The courtyard was originally in a state of disrepair and urgently needed attention. The new garden was built using funding from the WRVS and a legacy through the Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust from  Mr. Dennis Wyatt. His wife, Elizabeth was treated on the Stroke Unit 9 years ago. At the opening ceremony, CUH CEO, Dr Keith McNeil said “I’m sure Dennis would have been very impressed with how well his money has been spent and I know he was so grateful for the care and treatment his wife received on the ward.”

The courtyard has been named after Kae Rake, who was a ward clerk on R2 for many years and who sadly passed away at Easter. She was a great supporter of the development of the garden, loved flowers and was a trained florist. CUH Chair Jane Ramsey welcomed members of her family to the opening ceremony telling them “Kae was much loved by her colleagues within the unit.”
