Leading Cambridge surgeon receives top award for research

Mr Vikas Khanduja, a specialist in hip and knee surgery at Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital, has been honoured with the 2021 Hunterian Professor Award by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

The award-winning research by consultant orthopaedic surgeon Mr Vikas Khanduja centres on femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), a condition in which there is an abnormal contact between the rim of the hip socket (acetabulum) and the ball of the hip (femoral head-neck junction). This results in pain, labral and cartilage damage and in some cases can lead to the development of arthritis of the hip.

On being presented with the prestigious accolade for his innovative research, Mr Khanduja said: “I have dedicated my professional life to improving outcomes for the patients I see, and I would like to thank the Royal College for recognising my work, and my family, friends and colleagues for their support.”

Mr Khanduja has been instrumental in establishing the Young Adult Hip Service in the East of England. Based at Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital the clinic provides a specialist service to assess, diagnose and manage hip pain in young adults.

Operating at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital, Mr Vikas Khanduja is also leads the Cambridge Young Adult Hip Research group and is the President Elect to the British Hip Society.
