The Lingang Smart Factory of CATL, officially started construction on February 19th. Relying on the latest manufacturing technology and construction experience, this project in the Lingang New Area will promote the research and development of cutting-edge technologies and accelerate the industrialisation of new energy vehicles. After the completion of the project, CATL will build and deploy four major innovation systems in Shanghai to help Shanghai build a new energy technology innovation source.

The Lingang Smart Factory of CATL, officially started construction on February 19th. 

Relying on the latest manufacturing technology and construction experience, this project in the Lingang New Area will promote the research and development of cutting-edge technologies and accelerate the industrialisation of new energy vehicles. After the completion of the project, CATL will build and deploy four major innovation systems in Shanghai to help Shanghai build a new energy technology innovation source.

For the Lingang New Area, the arrival of the leading enterprise CATL will play a crucial role in improving the intelligent networked automobile industry chain. 

Facing the Key Challenges in New Energy Vehicles such as mileages anxiety and fast charging difficulties 

Relevant data shows that the installed capacity of power batteries in CATL reached 97GWh last year, a year-on-year increase of 168%, and the global market share climbed to 33%, ranking first in the world for five consecutive years. At the same time, the energy storage business has grown rapidly and is in a leading position in the world. 

New projects will focus on the research and development of low-energy and long-range power battery system architecture, integrated development and application of control systems, thermal management of high-efficiency battery systems, and research and development of low-temperature environment application technologies, so as to greatly improve the system integration efficiency of new energy vehicles, and solve the key challenges such as mileage anxiety and fat charging difficulties in new energy vehicles in a systematic manner. 

The CATL Lingang Smart Factory is expected to be put into operation in the first half of 2023, mainly providing battery modules for new energy vehicles and research and development of automotive chassis. CATL will also build and deploy advanced materials, system structure, extreme manufacturing and business model innovation, to realise the upgrading of key technologies in the industry, and to inject new energy into the digital transformation of Shanghai city. 

Lingang builds an industrial chain of "1,000-kilometer battery life for electric vehicles"

The Smart New Energy Vehicle Industry is one of the eight frontier industrial clusters in Lingang. The Lingang New Area's auto industry has achieved three historic breakthroughs - 

  • The output value scale is 179.4 billion yuan, becoming the first frontier industry to exceed 100 billion yuan; 

  • The output of complete vehicles exceeds 750,000 for the first time, accounting for a quarter of the city's total;

  • The number of smart new energy vehicle companies exceeded 100 for the first time, initially forming 8 categories of vehicle, engine, battery, body, interior and exterior, chassis, automotive electronics, and chips, covering the entire industrial chain of R&D, manufacturing, trade, and testing. The agglomeration trend of the energy vehicle industry has taken shape. 

At present, one out of every six new energy vehicles in the country is "Made in Lingang"and the Lingang New Area will focus on new growth points such as automobile  electrics, automobile power, and automobile accessories.

More and more enterprises are joining the industry circle of Lingang Smart New Energy Vehicles. In the future, the Lingang New Area will focus on the automotive electronics industry, and develop five fields: chassis electronics, cockpit electronics, electronic driving control, electronic network, and body electronics.
