Mills & Reeve advises on creation of biggest HE institution in London

Mills & Reeve has advised the Institute of Education (IOE) on its merger with University College London (UCL).

The merger, which will see the IOE become a school of UCL, confirms the UCL as the largest higher education institution in London, and the largest post graduate institution in the UK, with 19,000 post graduate students. The newly merged institution will have a combined income of over £1 billion.

Professor Chris Husbands, Director of the IOE, said: “This merger offers us huge prizes - the opportunity to extend global influence, to work with our traditional stakeholders in schools and colleges in new and more imaginative ways, and the chance to build cross-disciplinary work across the full range of higher education.”

News of the merger has been well received across London. Mayor Boris Johnson, said: “This significant merger will further reinforce London’s status as a global leader in higher education.”

Claire Clarke, corporate partner who led the Mills & Reeve team, commented: “We are delighted to have been able to help the Institute of Education on the terms of its merger with UCL and hope the merger creates a really strong combined force with common aims and shared values well equipped to meet the challenges of a changing Higher Education environment.”

Steve Denton, Pro Director [Strategy and Organisation] at the IOE commented “I am very grateful for all the hard work and support of the Mills & Reeve team in helping us agree the terms of the merger and steer it through as smoothly as possible”
