Milner Therapeutics Institute supports new £20 million MRC Hub to accelerate next-generation drug discovery

he Milner Therapeutics Institute (MTI) is proud to be part of a new £20 million Medical Research Council (MRC) investment that will establish a UK Pre-clinical Translational Models Hub.

Led by Professor Matthias Zilbauer and Professor Bertie Göttgens of the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute (CSCI), this new national resource will develop, benchmark, validate and accelerate the adoption of next-generation pre-clinical models, including organoids and other stem cell-derived systems. Together with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) this should improve the prediction of how new medicines might perform in patients.

As part of the team on the successful application the MTI will be involved in the characterisation of new models through the Target Discovery Laboratory led by Dr Erica Bello and the Functional Genomics Screening Laboratory led by Dr Chun Hao Wong and Dr Ulrike Künzel. Through its established network of pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology companies and academic researchers, the MTI will also help ensure that promising new models can be translated into approaches that have real impact on medicines research and development.

The award reinforces Cambridge’s position as a global centre for translational biomedical research, combining world-leading academic science with clinical expertise and a thriving life sciences ecosystem. Through its role in the Hub, the Milner Therapeutics Institute will continue to foster collaborations that help bridge the gap between scientific discovery and the development of new medicines for patients.

Professor Catherine Tralau-Stewart Executive Director, Milner Therapeutics Institute said:

This investment highlights the power of bringing together expertise across academia, industry and the NHS. The Milner Therapeutics Institute is proud to support this collaborative initiative, helping accelerate the adoption of advanced human models to improve drug discovery and deliver better treatments for patients.
