The Honour recognises Roland’s leadership of Addenbrooke’s and The Rosie Hospitals as well as his extensive work within the wider Cambridge life sciences system and nationally to advise on, shape and influence policy priorities across the health and care sector.

Mike More, Chair of CUH, commented: “I am delighted that Roland’s outstanding contribution to our hospitals and the wider health system has been recognised through this Honour. He has provided inspirational, compassionate and visible leadership over the past seven years, driving significant improvements across the organisation and the health and care system to benefit patients locally, regionally and nationally.

“Roland’s strong commitment to improving patient care and supporting staff has been outstanding during the incredibly challenging Covid pandemic period.  At the same time, he has maintained a strong vision on building for the future and driving the planning for the new Children’s and Cancer Research Hospitals for the local and regional populations of the east of England.”

In what is a credit to the strength of the broader CUH team, Roland held the role of joint chair of the Shelford Group of the 10 largest teaching and research hospital trusts in the country until the end of March 2023 when he became an unpaid National Director for Life Sciences at NHS England where his role includes contributing to the cross-Government Life Sciences Vision, and improving the development and adoption of promising and proven innovations.

Roland said: “I am tremendously proud to receive this Honour. It is a huge privilege to work at CUH with such dedicated and inspiring colleagues whose commitment I see every day and without which we would be nothing.  Together with health and care, industry, university and other partners, and despite the many challenges, we continue to make good progress for the benefit of our patients.  I am also delighted to be able to help shape and influence the future direction of health care through the opportunities we have here in Cambridge, and across the UK, to improve patient care through improvement and innovation.”
