Smart cities and the Cambridge - Lingang, Shanghai contexts

EFEC and LCN hosted Cambridge Cleantech in a webinar for business leaders in Lingang, Shanghai, to learn more about smart cities, innovation, and cleantech developments in the Cambridge region.

Guiding the way to Smart Cities – the Guided Busway

Lingang is a world-leading smart city, built as exemplar of techniques and low carbon impacts on the Shanghai peninsula.

An important part of its progress is through understanding international developments in smart cities and contributing to these discussions.

On Tuesday 30 May, the Lingang Cambridge Network (LCN) hosted a conference featuring Martin Garratt, CEO of Cambridge Cleantech, for business leaders in Lingang.

The webinar was in collaboration with by EFEC, who had worked with The Cambridge Network, to set up the Lingang Cambridge Network in 2019.

Martin covered an agenda of key issues that are part of the smart cities movement  - Renewable Energy, Built Environment, Smart Transport, Circular Economy, Waste Management, Recovery & Recycling.

Each aspect was illustrated with examples from the Cambridge Cleantech world. These provide evidence that, with the right investment, ingenuity and co-operation, a low carbon future can work.

For instance, Solar Fabric Car Ports enable EV car users to recharge their batteries using direct solar power; Kinetic Energy generates electricity from human footfall on walkways; and Cemfree manufacturers cement free concrete.

Like many low carbon solutions, the last of these tackles a problem that is vital, if not so familiar – cement manufacture produces about 7% of world carbon.

An informative presentation led to some incisive questions for the audience – how to get the public to accept changes to low carbon; how some of the technologies could transfer to Lingang; how to attract investors; what attracts UK cleantech companies into China?

This session was co-prepared, facilitated and interpreted by Lily Lin, CEO, EFEC and strategy consultant for Lingang Investment Holding Group.
