Why are 'sleep walkers' bad for business?

Nobody likes to feel lost. We all like a bit of structure in our lives and we like to know when we’ve achieved what we set out to achieve, don’t we?

Nobody likes not knowing where they’re heading, what they may have to deal with along the way, or what the end looks like.  If you’re setting out on a journey - you’ll have a destination in mind, you’ll pre-plan your steps, organise your trip around some possible obstacles, perhaps even think about a back-up plan if something unforeseen happens. But, most reassuring of all, no matter what happens you’ll know when you’ve got to the end.

We all like a bit of structure in our lives and we like to know when we’ve achieved what we set out to achieve, don’t we? Otherwise, what’s the point?

Thirty-nine percent of workers are sleep walking through their careers

So why would people at work expect something other than to be supported in developing their careers? A recent (2012) poll of 2,027 workers, conducted on behalf of career management firm Fairplace, found that 39% are “sleep walking” through their careers, with no plans in place. Now that can’t be good for them and it certainly isn’t good for business - your business.

Businesses grow and thrive on motivated happy people all working together, pushing towards that one goal. There is, of course, more than one way to motivate your staff, but one of the easiest to implement and which costs businesses minimal outlay is to recognise the importance of partnering with your staff to facilitate their career development and welcome it in the workplace.  Of course, it is their career and they have to take the lead, but providing support and showing you are interested will pay dividends.
