Cicerone and Viewranger offer Yorkshire Dales guided routes on your phone

People who like to travel light and be spontaneous will appreciate a new agreement between Cicerone, publishers of over 290 award-winning outdoors guidebooks and ViewRanger, the UK’s leading outdoors GPS smartphone app.

The agreement with Cicerone will see routes from two of its popular titles ‘Yorkshire Dales North and East’ and ‘Yorkshire Dales South and West’ made available to download via ViewRanger, which is a complete navigation tool on your phone.

ViewRanger allows you to combine detailed mapping, such as the GB’s Ordnance Survey Landranger series, with recommended routes created by experts and members of the ViewRanger community.   There is a database of over 10,000 routes in the UK to choose from.

The Cicerone Guides are rather special. Few areas in England are so immediately appealing as the Yorkshire Dales, each valley has a character of its own and the Cicerone guide takes you on an exploration of some of the most remarkable limestone landscapes in the country. Walks, ranging from gentle three-mile strolls to more strenuous daylong rambles, aim to seek out the area’s most attractive and fascinating features.

Cicerone Guides are written for outdoor people, by outdoor people and co-owner Jonathan Williams says: “We work closely with our readers, as well as authors and specialist outdoor organisations, to cover both popular and new and exciting areas.

“The guides are continuously refreshed and renewed, they are full of ideas and inspiration to get people to try new experiences and explore.”

In the same spirit, Jonathan says Cicerone has decided to  ‘dip its toes in the water' with the ViewRanger tie-in.

“It will be a good way to see how popular it is.  People will always want a paper-based guidebook to browse through when planning a trip but they may also appreciate the GPS mapped dimension the mobile option can add when they are out in the field.”

Ian Pond, ViewRanger Marketing Director agrees; “The great value of ViewRanger is its accessibility, it is possible to have the mapping and the marked trail for your chosen walk or ride down loaded on to your phone so it’s ready to go when you are.  This means that when you are out it will work even without a mobile signal and you will always know where you are using the GPS.”

“Cicerone guidebooks are a very highly regarded source of expert information and the fact you can access all the content for each walk via ViewRanger will convince a number of people to give the mobile version a trial.”

To obtain the routes from the Cicerone guidebooks on your smartphone, simply download the free ViewRanger app from your app store, and search for “Cicerone” in the routes menu. Each route download is charged using ViewRanger credits at 99p and Ordnance Survey Landranger 1:50K mapping for Yorkshire & Humberside costs just £7.49.
