Karen travels to Nepal to train schoolteachers

Not content with raising significant amounts of money for her favourite charity, Children of Nepal, Cambridge-based training expert Karen Roem is now offering practical help – travelling to Nepal in December to provide software training for schoolteachers in the country.

Children of Nepal is a small British charitable organisation that has the aim of extending and improving educational opportunities for children living in Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the world. Since 2004 Karen's business, Roem Limited, has donated £3 to the charity for every completed evaluation form received following a training session.

Karen –writer of the popular Cambridge Network 'Tame your computer' column – says:"Raising funds for the charity is one way I can ensure that delegates’ feedback makes a real difference; not just to refine the quality of the training offered at Roem Limited, but to improve the lives of children abroad.

"Sue and Nara Pandey, Trustees of Children of Nepal, usually produce a newsletter following each visit to Nepal to update all their supporters with the latest news of projects and activities. Back in January 2012 I spotted that one of the schools had been kitted out with computers and I offered my help.

"The headteacher seemed keen on software training for the teachers (the ‘train the trainer’ approach) and said he was going to try and get a few teachers from different schools together to benefit from my skills and experience.

"Almost two years later (and just a few weeks to go until the trip), I have received the names of 14 teachers, representing eight different schools in the Nawalparasi District, widening the impact of the training."

Karen, who is funding her own travel and expenses, added:" I have never visited Nepal, and I am very excited at the prospect of meeting some of the people my efforts have helped over the years. This is a challenge for me, but I'm looking forward to being able to demonstrate my commitment in a pragmatic way. It is such a worthwhile cause."

Children of Nepal
Since 1997, Children of Nepal has initiated, funded and supervised various projects in the Gaidakot region, for example providing sanitation or clean drinking water in schools in Gaidakot, Hardi and Shree Bhagyodaya and building or upgrading classrooms in Bijaya, Mahendra and Panchakanya Schools.

Children of Nepal is a charity registered with the UK government's Charity Commission for England and Wales. Every penny raised through donors, sponsors and supporters is spent in Nepal for their stated purpose of renovating classrooms, installing sanitation and clean water and building or upgrading schools in rural Nepal, to extend and improve educational opportunities for Nepali children.
