Independent Cambridge - crafts handmade in the UK

The colourful and informative book, Independent Cambridge, celebrates the fantastic range of independent retailers we have on our doorstep. Read this week about cambridge contemporary crafts.

Sister gallery to cambridge contemporary art in Trinity Street, cambridge contemporary crafts was opened in 2009 to showcase the ever-expanding range of crafts.

Housed in a beautiful 16th-century building located just opposite St Bene’t’s Church, the oldest church in the city, and two doors down from the famous Eagle pub (where Francis Crick announced that he and James Watson had discovered the structure of DNA), the gallery is another attraction making this historic street a worthwhile destination for locals and visitors alike.

Showcasing crafts handmade in the UK, cambridge contemporary crafts holds a huge range of work by up-and-coming as well as established craftspeople in the mediums of ceramics, glass, textiles, wood and jewellery.

Throughout the year, the ever-changing display promotes the work of these artists and craftspeople – look out for, amongst others, the wonderfully glazed ceramics by local artist Katharina Klug, delicate porcelain bowls by Mizuyo Yamashita, sculptural jewellery by Zelda Wong and stunning, bold jewellery by Tatty Devine.

As in the Trinity Street gallery, the atmosphere is friendly and genuinely helpful and prices start from just a few pounds.
The Art Council’s Own Art scheme is also available, making it easy and affordable to buy original, high-quality contemporary art and craft. You can borrow up to £2,000, or as little as £100, which is paid back interest-free in equal instalments over a period of ten months.

The gallery also offers gift vouchers and runs a wedding list service.
