Independent Cambridge - arts centre, shop and gallery

The colourful and informative book, Independent Cambridge, celebrates the fantastic range of independent retailers we have on our doorstep. Read this week about Cambridge Art Salon.

Just off Mill Road, on the Romsey side of the bridge and at the end of either Sedgwick Street or Catharine Street, is a relatively new addition to the growing contemporary and visual art scene in the city – the Cambridge Art Salon.

The Salon, which celebrated its second birthday in September 2013, is an old motorbike shop turned makeshift arts centre for the community of Cambridge, offering work space and gallery space to members of the public.

Working as an artist can be very isolating, but at the Salon there is the chance for people to meet, support each other and also collaborate in a nurturing and affordable environment. And of course there is the opportunity to purchase creative work –
what better way to support independent artists and designer-makers?

Cambridge Art Salon has, on-site, a range of artists and creative practitioners working in contemporary arts and creative media, with a small shop that showcases some of their works. The gallery shows a vibrant range of artists from all backgrounds, many already established internationally or locally, wanting a relaxed environment to try out a new idea – or just starting out.

Exhibitions are obviously regular events on the calendar and so are art classes for both adults and children.

The Cambridge Art Salon also pioneers contemporary arts projects with a community focus, such as ‘The Cambridge Art Walks Map’, which aims to make the city’s broader art scene more accessible to the public. In 2013, they launched the first ever Romsey Art Festival.
