Enjoy an evening of independent local music

Music - with a free gig at The Salisbury Club as part of the Mill Road Winter Fair on Saturday December 6th - is the latest focus for Independent Cambridge, the organisation that champions the city's independent retailers, artisans and events.

The company that publishes Independent Cambridge - the definitive guide to the indie sector in Cambridge - is turning its hand to music, as the book's editor, Anne Beamish, explains: "Up until last year I was on the committee for Mill Road Winter Fair and organised the buskers during the day as well as other music in the evening.

"I’m no longer on the committee but even though over 10,000 people come to enjoy the fair, there is only a central team of 10 volunteers who run it, so any help they can get is appreciated.

"Independent Cambridge decided we would take on the running of the evening gig. We’ve done an indie fashion show and been involved in indie food event Eat Cambridge, so we wanted to hold another event. What better than to look at the independent music scene as our next indie group to celebrate?"

The line-up for the free gig features four local bands, starting at 7pm and including:

  • The Ramsey Lewis Tribute, who play popular dance tunes from the 60s and 70s in the style of the American jazz pianist Ramsey Lewis.
  • Della Portas, in which broadcaster Nick Barraclough leads a band of talented fellow Cambridge musicians, giving a new sound to classics through from the 60s to today.
  • The Sound of Pop Art, sophisticated soul / sonic R&B / total pop. Representing a cool summer breeze, they aim to lift the spirits with their melodic songs.
  • Jack, which includes Cambridge songwriting royalty: Kimberley Rew on guitar. Irresistibly rootsy, superbly shuffley and, at times, beautifully bluesy.

The event, supported by the Suzie Oakes Trust, is at The Salisbury Club, 272 Mill Road, Cambridge CB1 3NF.

The popular independent event, Mill Road Winter Fair, is on Saturday December 6th - read more about it on this site next week.
