Chiltern Society chooses ViewRanger to put the best of The Chilterns onto mobile

ViewRanger, the outdoor guide, mapping and navigation app, is working with the Chiltern Society to make many of the best walking routes in the Chilterns available to download on smartphones and tablets.

It coincides with today’s publication of a new walking book, 50 Great Walks in the Chilterns, produced by the Chiltern Society as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations. Every walk from the book has been made available to download onto Apple and Android phones, tablets, and smart watches via the ViewRanger mobile app.

The routes include favourites from society volunteers and circular walks of varying length, split into three geographical areas throughout the entire Chilterns area from south Oxfordshire to north Herts.

Craig Wareham, ViewRanger co-founder, said: “Working with ViewRanger has helped the Chiltern Society to create rich digital route guides that mirror the walks within the guidebook.

“Using ViewRanger, walkers can easily follow the route guides and view their current position on a detailed map using the active navigation system which alerts the user if they veer off track.

“Photographs, waypoint information, and other helpful content for each walk are included within the digital route guides. The guides are downloaded and stored on a mobile device, so that no mobile network signal is required when navigating along them on a map.

“ViewRanger can also be used to record walks and other adventures – complete with route statistics and images, tracked routes can be shared with the ViewRanger community and other friends via social media or email.”

Chiltern Society route compiler, Andrew Clark, said: “The Chiltern Society has been organising walks for nearly all of its 50 year existence so it was only appropriate that we should produce a very special walking book to mark our Golden Jubilee.

“The walks suit all occasions – there are family walks, pub walks, longer distance walks and riverside walks – and all are on public rights of way or open access land. It has taken over one thousand hours of walking and research to finalise the book, but it has been a labour of love.”

Routes from 50 Great Walks in the Chilterns are available to purchase and download as individual routes via the ViewRanger app. They have also been grouped into three Route Collections by area, as in the book, for ease of browsing:

50 Great Walks in the Chilterns: Northern Chilterns
50 Great Walks in the Chilterns: Mid Chilterns
50 Great Walks in the Chilterns: South Chilterns

The book 50 Great Walks in the Chilterns is available via the Chiltern Society website, www.chilternsociety.org.uk and in local bookshops priced £14.95.

The Chiltern Society will be publishing further walking route guides through ViewRanger in the coming months.
