These very versatile compounds have been used as sites for chemical reactions performed in constrained environments which provide local high concentration of reagents and therefore lead to faster reaction kinetics and have the potential of leading to unexpected regio- and chemo-selectivities.
They have also been used as sensors for organic amines in view of functional groups present in the cucurbituril core structure. In this context they can be viewed as natural models for receptors of biologically relevant molecules and have been used to this end. Direct functionalization of the cucurbituril core can easily generate custom-made derivatives. Supramolecular architectures can and have therefore been constructed based on this core motif. They have proven quite useful as motifs in supramolecular chemistry.
