Cash for the Community - help choose the final five!

Ten charity or community groups are vying for your vote to be in with the chance of being one of the 15 beneficiaries of this year's Cambridge Building Society £10,000 Cash for the Community pot.

Maggie's Wallace

Area: Cambridge and the wider East Anglian area.

Description: Maggie's provides free practical and social support for people with cancer and their families and friends.

Funding uses: Money donated would go towards one-to-one sessions for cancer-sufferers with a cancer support specialist.

 

The Phoenix Trust

Area: Cambridge City, South and East Cambs

Description: Furthering education for disadvantaged young people and adults with learning difficulties, mental health problems or behavioural issues.

Funding uses: The Trust was financially supported through Cash for the Community in 2014, and now it needs new materials to enable it to continue providing activities and learning opportunities for the people it helps.

 

Friends with Disabilities

Area: Cambridgeshire

Description: A disability awareness group helping people with disabilities to live a full and independent life. The group works to help prevent social isolation.

Funding uses: Funding could help subsidise the group's holiday to the Isle of Wight.

 

Home-Start Cambridgeshire

Area: Cambridgeshire

Description: Home-Start is the UK's leading family support charity. It is a voluntary organisation that offers support to families who have at least one child under five who are struggling to cope.

Funding uses: To train new volunteers.

 

Centre 33

Area: Cambridge

Description: Centre 33 provides counselling for young people covering a range of issues, including housing, sexual health, family problems, bullying. The services are free and confidential.

Funding uses: The charity - currently covering just the city centre - wishes to expand the reach of its services across Cambridgeshire.

 

Laughasize

Area: Whittlesford, Great Shelford

Description: Aimed at over-75s, the group runs a series of pilates-based classes ideal for stiff muscles and joints and ideal for those who have had hip replacements. Humour is used to help participants feel better psychologically and physically.

Funding uses: Laughasize wants to launch another class for the less-able, for which they would need another volunteer teacher, equipment and marketing materials.

 

1st Burwell Scout Group

Area: Burwell and surrounding villages

Description: The scout group runs a series of adventure-based activities and personal development opportunities for young people aged between six and 25 years old.

Funding uses: The group is fundraising £150,000 to build a new hut. It has raised £12,000 during the past year.

 

Royal British Legion: Arbury Manor Branch

Area: North Cambridge

Description: It provides support for ex-service people and their partners. Most members are over 70 or disabled.

Funding uses: The branch received Cash for the Community funding in 2014, and now it needs financial support to take its members for a day out to a poppy factory.

 

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

Area: National but the funding will support Cambridge-based projects

Description: The charity gives assistance to those living with Type 1 diabetes. It is also searching for a cure.

Funding uses: The Foundation needs financial aid for outreach events, includning information days and coffee mornings. It also requires support for research it conducts with Cambridge University.

 

CamTrust

Area: Cambridge City, South Cambs and Huntingdon

Description: CamTrust is a charity based in Impington that specialises in training adults with physical disabilities, learning difficulties and long term health problems.

Funding uses: The charity received Cash for the Community funding in 2015, and now, money would go towards two iPad Minis to help students on its travel training course with maps, journey planning, videos and more.
