Photonics materials available in the UK and Eire from Strem Chemicals

Among the many materials used for photonics applications, quantum dots represent a very special class of materials.

The area of photonics is ubiquitous in daily life and deals with light (photon) generation and detection. Most photonic applications are in the range of visible and near-infrared light. The term photonics developed as an outgrowth of the first practical semiconductor light emitters from the early 1960s and optical fibers from the 1970s.

Quantum dots are semiconductor nanocrystals that show exceptional optical and electrical properties due to quantum-confined nature of their energy levels. For a given quantum dot material, the variation in optical properties can be modulated with the size of the dots themselves. Typically the size of quantum dots ranges from a few nanometers to tens of nanometers.  Materials are based on cadmium sulphide selenide/zinc sulphide and can be assembled as either quantum dots in the solid form or as core shell materials.

Strem UK offers CANdots® Series A Plus: Quantum rods. These fluorescent semiconductor nanocrystals are available in three different emission colours (green, orange and red). B CANdots® is a registered trademark from the Center for Applied Nanotechnology (CAN) GmbH Hamburg who have an agreement with Strem Inc. to supply the CANdots®

Based on CAN’s profound knowledge in nanoparticle synthesis, morphological features have been optimised to yield advanced optoelectronic properties.

These are an enhanced quantum efficiency and an extremely high extinction coefficient resulting in a brightness up to ten times more than normal quantum dots

Due to their unique shape these nanocrystals exhibit higher photo‐ and thermostability. Combining these advantages with superior process ability, caused by efficient shielding through an outer organic shell, makes the CANdots® Series A Plus rods highly suitable for many material and life science applications.

Examples include solid state lighting (LED) and lasers as well as demanding fluorescence imaging tools.

Further customisation of CANdots® Series A Plus rods can be done to provide the best solution for fluorescence applications.

Strem is pleased to offer an assortment of quantum dot-based materials possessing very well-defined photonics properties.
