Explore Independent Cambridge: Urban Larder

With the help of Independent Cambridge - the community of ‘real’ Cambridge - Cambridge Network continues its weekly exploration of the best independent shops, cafés, restaurants, people, businesses, venues and events in Cambridge and the surrounding area. This week: Urban Larder.

On the Romsey side of Mill Road bridge (recently described as ‘one of the hippest neighbourhoods in Britain’), there’s one indie establishment that’s gone that bit further and become not just a great coffee shop, but also a real destination for visitors as well as a hub for the local community.

Owner Duncan Mason and his team have been running Urban Larder since 2015. During this time, they have become known as ‘the larder family’ which accurately describes the genuinely warm and friendly atmosphere created by the country-modern vibe of the interior as well as all who work there. From parents with kids through to the local freelance folk, meeting up ‘at the Larder’ is a welcome home-from-home.

Now to the coffee and food! The Larder’s coffee comes from Butterworth & Son, is an espresso blend of four beans, and is really very good! There’s also a wide selection of loose-leaf teas and locally-sourced hot chocolate.

On the food-front, choose from a daily feast of colourful salads, sausage rolls and scotch eggs, soups, cakes (including doughnuts to die for), and some of the best sourdough toasties in town.

As with all good larders, there’s a carefully-chosen range of produce to buy and take home – including the amazing coffee, which can be ground to order. If all that wasn’t enough there is now ‘Urban Later’, when the team keep the door open late, so you can enjoy all this with a glass or two of something a little stronger.
