Ultra-high field MRI systems and their application in the study of human brains

Dr.Chris Rodgers is the Head of 7T MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) Physics at the Wolfson Brain Imaging Center based at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.  Chris will provide an overview of the scanner and how his group is developing advanced MRI and MRS methods to push the boundaries of MRI techniques.  He will present on how the latest methods can be used in clinical studies in collaboration with colleagues in Clinical Neurosciences and elsewhere.

Chris holds a Sir Henry Dale Fellowship funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Royal Society which supports his work in Cambridge and also in Oxford.   His work by his research group at the OCMR centre, University of Oxford, develops and translate advanced 7T MRI and MRS methods to study metabolism in the human heart and liver.

The MRI scanner's field strength is 7T (Tesla), which equates to a magnetic field 140,000 times stronger than the Earth's magnetic field.  The overall weight of the scanner is less than 25 tonnes and produces a rf output of up to 16 KW.  The system re-liquefies the helium used to cool the magnet.
