Iris Cafe - Food service assistant

The Iris Cafe at Newnham College requires a full-time, permanent Food Service Assistant to join the busy front of house team. This represents an excellent opportunity to join a team of hospitality professionals and gain skills and experience. You will be  working first and foremost in the busy and popular café at the College, but also, occasionally on a range of other catering functions and events, to support the provision of an excellent catering service at the College. 

This role is to work as part of the busy front of house team in the Iris Café, providing an excellent café service to Fellows, Staff, Students, visitors and the general public. Occasionally there may be the need to work elsewhere in the College as part of the overall Front of House team serving the Catering Department. The popular Iris café provides an excellent service, 7 days a week, of hot and cold drinks, cakes, sandwiches and other café favourites and in this post you will work with colleagues and the Café Manager to deliver high standards of customer service and presentation and an overall excellent café experience to guests. 

Main duties:

  • To serve in the Café, delivering a wide range of beverages, cakes and snacks.
  • To use the barrista machine confidently and efficiently making and delivering the full menu of hot drinks to a high standard for customers.
  • To ensure the Iris Café is kept clean and tidy and a pleasant environment for Fellows, staff, students, guests and the general public.
  • To ensure high levels of customer service are delivered.
  • To work alongside colleagues and casual staff, collaboratively as a team.
  • To assist in the smooth running of internal and external events where catering is required.
  • To help prepare and set up the catering requirements for functions and events at the College.
  • To ensure there are sufficient amounts of supplies to keep the Iris Café functioning and to alert the appropriate manager if stocks are getting low.
  • To liaise with the kitchen brigade, conference and housekeeping teams effectively and efficiently when necessary.
  • To ensure full knowledge of the dish content, cooking methods, portion size, correct service utensils and appropriate accompaniments at each service.
  • To understand and ensure awareness of food allergens and how to advise customers.
  • To ensure operation within the strict food hygiene and food handling regulations.
  • To ensure a presentable and professional demeanour.
  • To maintain flexibility and adaptability to work where you are needed most and to work alternative weekends and in the evening as the College requires.
