Laboratory and Facilities Technician

We have an exciting opportunity to join our busy department in a key role which underpins activities in our research laboratories based in Addenbrookes Hospital. The successful candidate will support the Laboratory & Facilities Coordinator in the oversight and management of physical infrastructure, facilities and high-quality support services on behalf of the Department of Medicine, in order to support the efficient and effective operation of its research activities.

You will undertake the day-to-day supervision of two staff members in the facilities team, and take a lead role in facilities management, organising and ensuring compliance with operational safety of equipment and keeping people informed of facilities matters. You will monitor stocks of compressed gases, liquid nitrogen, dry ice, oversee running of the Cell Bank, oversee glass washing and waste stream disposal (clinical, WEEE, chemical etc). You will assist project manage refurbishments, new works and repairs with the hospital trust and ensure servicing and validation of equipment by external engineers is performed in a timely manner, in conjunction with health and safety compliance regulations.

You should have significant hands-on experience in facilities support and/or significant experience in a laboratory or hospital setting.

You will be a skilled communicator and demonstrate tact, diplomacy and confidentiality at all times. This is a very varied role where no two days are the same, so we are looking for someone who can be adaptable and remain calm in situations where priorities can change at short notice.

The role involves some manual handling and so a good level of physical fitness is essential.

The role holder will be required to hold on-call duties (compensated) on a rotational basis. They must be able to report to the site within 30 minutes for out-of-hours emergencies.
