We are seeking a skilled and proactive Maintenance Fitter (Carpenter) to join our on-site Estates team at the Cavendish Estate.
Working across the Cavendish Estate, you will undertake a broad range of carpentry and joinery maintenance, repair, installation and refurbishment works, ensuring buildings remain safe, compliant and fit for purpose. The role combines reactive maintenance, planned preventative maintenance and minor project work, supporting the University's commitment to providing world-class facilities for teaching and research.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned and reactive carpentry and joinery maintenance works as directed by the Building Services Manager or Deputy Manager.
- Undertake repairs, refurbishment and installation of doors, door frames, windows, partitions, floors, ceilings, fitted furniture, shelving, cupboards and other building fabric elements.
- Install, inspect, maintain and repair fire doors and associated ironmongery in accordance with current legislation, regulations and best practice.
- Complete preventative maintenance activities and building fabric inspections, identifying defects and carrying out appropriate repairs.
- Assist with minor refurbishment and alteration projects to support teaching, research and workplace requirements.
- Measure, manufacture, modify and install bespoke joinery items, laboratory support structures and office fittings.
- Work closely with Estates colleagues, contractors and suppliers to deliver maintenance activities safely and effectively.
- Provide day-to-day technical guidance and support to maintenance assistants where required.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections and fire door compliance using digital systems.
- Operate safely in accordance with University policies, risk assessments, safe systems of work and statutory requirements.
About You
You will be an experienced carpenter/joiner with a strong maintenance background and a commitment to delivering high-quality workmanship.
Essential Criteria
- Experience in a maintenance carpentry/joinery role.
- Experience installing, maintaining and repairing fire doors and associated hardware.
- Recognised qualification in Carpentry and Joinery (NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds or equivalent).
- Strong understanding of building fabric maintenance and refurbishment.
- Good knowledge of health and safety legislation and safe working practices.
- Good communication, organisational and IT skills.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable Criteria
- Fire Door Inspection, Installation or Maintenance qualification.
- Experience working within a large and complex estate.
