Patent Engineer

We design scalable, energy efficient-processors and related technologies to deliver the intelligence in applications ranging from sensors to servers, including smartphones, tablets, enterprise infrastructure and the Internet of Things.

Enjoy engineering, but looking for a different type of technical role? This may be for you! Patent engineers carry out a technical role within the Legal Department, analysing patents and our products, alongside our own engineers and attorneys. Patent engineers don’t need to train for patent exams (it’s your engineering and interpersonal skills that are a priority!). You will learn key aspects of patent law on the job, and if additional training in patent law interests you, it’s something we would support you to develop further.

Job Overview:

The Legal team is looking for an engineer to provide technical analysis for our IP matters. As part of this role, you’ll have opportunities to become knowledgeable about many of our product offerings. Litigation can target any Arm product, so adaptability to rapidly learn how an Arm product works is key.

The work includes identifying applicable technical defences. You will act as a bridge between Arm engineering and internal and external lawyers and Arm partners, so clear communication is critical, as is the ability to work with audiences having varying levels of technical background. Experience working with patents would be helpful but is not required. Whilst our Litigation team is predominantly based in Austin and San Jose, this role is in Cambridge so that you can engage with the large engineering presence there. There will still be plenty of support for development and training, as much of Legal will be nearby, including a senior patent engineer and most of our patent prosecution team. This role may require occasional international travel.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluating allegations of patent infringement and the design of our products at issue.
  • Explaining the operation of Arm products to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Performing searches using our patent tools to discover relevant prior art.
  • Contributing to legal guidance on intellectual property issues (e.g. open source, AI, standard setting organisations).
  • Working with engineering groups and litigators to devise product changes to avoid patent infringement.

Required Skills and Experience :

  • A qualification in electronics/physics or proven technical ability in our field through years of engineering work.
  • Experience developing and implementing Arm technology such as CPUs, GPUs, bus fabric, memory controllers, or circuit design.
  • Ability to explain complex technology clearly and concisely to non-technical experts.

“Nice To Have” Skills and Experience :

  • Experience with patents as an inventor, supporting prosecution work, or in patent engineering.

In Return:

This role offers the opportunity to learn about a variety of Arm's product offerings and work closely with highly skilled engineering teams in many different fields across multiple offices. You will also have the chance to apply your engineering skills to new challenges in each new legal matter that we encounter. There also may be opportunities to travel abroad for team functions or to support litigation matters.
