New course helps transform good managers into great leaders

How does a good manager become a great leader? Cambridge Network members have the opportunity to learn about leadership behaviours at a new Learning Collaboration (LC) course - part of a range of valuable training options available this autumn.

Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.
- Peter F. Drucker
Essential Drucker: Management, the Individual and Society

With many Cambridge Network businesses growing - and often promoting from within - the demand for management training has never been higher.

"Of our hundreds of courses, the one entitled 'Transition to Management' is our most popular," says Ali Wilson, LC's courses and events manager. "It has attracted 240 people in the past 12 months alone."

Now, she says, many of those who have made the leap into management are looking to fine-tune their leadership skills, and LC's response is a new course - 21st Century Leadership, which makes its debut on September 11th and 12th.

This is a two-day interactive, reflective and highly practical course, leading to concrete actions to achieve success through positive and engaging leadership behaviours.

Offered by Development Group International (DGI) - the training organisation which delivers 'Transition to Management' -  this follow-on course focuses on getting individuals to recognise their natural approach to leadership, to understand where they may benefit from adjusting their style and to be clear on the key challenges a leader must face.

Trainer David Mace of DGI (pictured) says: "Business will always demand 'the outcome' (strategic goals) but it is how we get there that will dictate the long term success of the organisation. And the how is down to us; leaders at whatever level of our company."

It aims to enable managers to become effective leaders by:

  • Knowing what to work on to create a high performing climate through leadership behaviours
  • Providing tools and techniques to enable you to lead through change
  • Helping you become highly self aware and able to adapt yourself to achieve the maximum potential of your team.

Donna Murray, Research HR Manager at Schlumberger, who attended a 'taster' session for the new course recently, has now signed up for the two-day course. She says: "I really enjoyed the introductory session for the 21st Century Leadership course. It was different from the usual leadership courses, and I am certainly looking forward to more at the full day sessions."

Dave Kent of Complete Fabrication has also signed up for the two-day course. He said: "The taster session on 21st Century Leadership was excellent as it made me look at my issues with leadership and how they were mirrored with my own personality and from the perspective of the Chimp and human brain. This sold the course to me as I read the The Chimp Paradox by Professor Steve Peters, and remain fascinated by how our minds work and how groups of people communicate. I look forward to learning more about leadership and taming my chimp."
