Tough talk: what happens when conversations get difficult

How we deal with difficult conversations is often one of the most important aspects of our working lives. Do we avoid them for as long as possible? Do we tackle them head-on?

The single most important thing [you can do] is to shift [your] internal stance from "I understand" to "Help me understand." Everything else follows from that. . . .     Douglas Stone, author of Difficult Conversations:  How to discuss what matters most.

In almost any job, difficult discussions are essential. And in senior positions, these ‘difficult’ conversations are even more common; whether it’s disciplining someone for poor performance or having to let them go.

Just how do you tell a colleague or member of staff, who you may like on a personal basis, that they’ve not been up to the task?

Whatever industry you work in, it’s likely that – at some stage – you are faced with a difficult discussion of this nature that, no matter how much you want it to, will not go away.

Career Ambitions is a Cambridge-based organisation that has extensive experience of working alongside professionals in a range of industries to give them the career skills to succeed and flourish at work.

The business is owned by Lindsey Reed, an experienced Executive Career Confidence Coach who specialises in working alongside individuals to boost their confidence, and Katherine Wiid, a nationally recognised Career Management Coach and one of just 400 Language and Behavioural (LAB) Profile experts in the world.

It is a unique organisation that, in addition to running a range of training events and one-on-one coaching sessions, provides an online club that is tailored to the individual and offers round-the-clock career support.

Their next event looks at how we approach these tricky work related discussions and how we can use our language effectively to diffuse any situation.

“Lindsey and Katherine bring so much to every session they deliver.” Sarah, St Neots.
