Gen Up Cambridge

Cambridge based business psychologist, Kelly Drewery, advised delegates at the Cambridge Network breakfast event last Wednesday that “Young employees want different deals from employers. A one-size fits all deal on benefits and flexible working just doesn’t work anymore.”

"Cambridge’s success is fuelled by its highly- skilled, creative and committed workforce.," she said. "To maintain that momentum as the economy grows it’s vital that employers understand the assumptions and expectations of the young Gen Z graduates and apprentices just entering the workforce. My research offers that insight, as well as assessing the implications for engagement and rewards, benefits and job design across the older generations too."

Warning that assumptions and expectations vary dramatically between the five generations now in the workplace – Veterans, Baby Boomers, Gen X, Gen Y, and newcomers, Gen Z – Kelly pointed out that, “Understanding the different expectations of each generation around motivation and career development are important issues for Cambridge’s continued success. It helps businesses recruit and retain highly-skilled workers at all levels, and in all sectors, from hi-tech to service industries.”
