The age of career diversification: it’s time to future proof your career

For some industries, it’s currently a time of rough waters. In the oil industry, many have found themselves on ‘eight weeks’ notice’ and are unable to find work. In the farming industry, 50% of farmers are having to find other sources of income. It’s a time to be clever, and think long term, or risk getting left behind.

As the economic landscape continues to shift and change, it’s no longer safe to rely on one source of income.

You may be a master of your art, but what if that skill is no longer in demand? Employers are no longer looking for employees who are good at one thing… they want multi-skilled team players, who can put their hand to different tasks and are open to learning new things. If you think about it, a multi-skilled workforce will allow more flexibility for the company, and ensure they can adapt and embrace market changes.

Diversifying doesn’t necessarily mean spreading yourself too thinly and becoming a jack-of-all-trades. It just means taking a step back and re-evaluating your skillset, to identify your strengths and weaknesses and opportunities to increase your employability.

Here are three simple steps to diversifying your career:

1. Identify your weaknesses: Find ways to turn these into strengths. Ultimately, this will expand your skillset and consequently increase your value and employability.

2. Learn a new skill: You’re never too old to learn a new trick! A study from the National Bureau of Economic Research in 2012 found that learning can make you happier, increase your confidence and even give you an energy boost. As well as of course adding to your skillset and improving your CV.

3. Identify your Transferable Skills: These are the skills that can move industries and offices… whether you are a strong communicator, great with numbers, or a decision maker.
