Job vacancies reached an all time high in 2015, promising a buoyant job market in 2016…

As we enter 2016 it’s time to look back on the year that’s gone by. Katherine Wiid of Career Ambitions asks: what did 2015 bring?

One thing is for sure; the job market has 100% recovered from the recession. Last year saw the highest-ever levels of job vacancies (according to TradingEconomics.com), reaching 747,000 in October 2015.

So what does this mean for the UK’s businesses? It means that job seekers are increasingly following their hearts rather than their heads. It’s no longer a case of ‘any job is a good job’ as it was during the recession. The market has turned and the power is now firmly in the job seekers’ hands! So it’s time to reevaluate why our employees are choosing to work for us. What are we offering them? Why do they choose to come to work every day?

To secure and retain the best candidates, businesses need to be reevaluating their mission statements. While in years past people have been looking for jobs that suit their skillsets, they are increasingly looking for careers that are meaningful and careers they will love. Do your employees love what they do? Do they come to work motivated, passionate and inspired, every day?

Apple is a fantastic example of a company whose ideals have evolved as they have grown. From Steve Jobs’ original mission to “make a contribution to the world by making tools for the mind that advance humankind” there have of course been changes.  But Apple’s ethos remains the same: a belief “that [they’re] on the face of the Earth to make great products”.

What’s your mission statement, and how strongly do your employees believe in it? Securing candidates who share your ethos is surely the secret to success. Studies have found that employees who enjoy their jobs are not only more fulfilled in life, but also more productive, more motivated, more ambitious and have better mental health. And ultimately, this can only have a positive effect on your business!
