Preparing for recruitment events: are you ready to attract the best?

September was packed full of recruitment events, networking and job fairs. Katherine Wiid of Career Ambitions says: "What struck us was not the number of fantastic candidates, enthusiastic employers or tempting job opportunities. There were plenty of candidates, employers and job opportunities, but not many that really stood out."

She writes:

We know that recruitment events are a fantastic opportunity to showcase your company and attract the top talent in attendance – that’s why you’re there. However, are there a few things you could do better?

Here’s a checklist covering what you can do before, during and after the recruitment event to sell yourself and the brand you represent.

BEFORE A RECRUITMENT EVENT:

We all know "you only get one chance to make a first impression." And while that saying is usually applied to the candidates in this scenario, it’s just as relevant to employers. Candidates want to get a feel for the company and will be quick to write you off.

If a potential candidate asked you the following, what would you say so that you are not caught unawares?

  • What are you looking for in a candidate?
  • What opportunities are there for learning and development?
  • Where could I be in one, three, five years' time if I worked for you?
  • As an organisation, what’s your policy on work-life balance?
  • Are you recruiting for skills, or attitude?
  • How would you describe the organisation’s culture?

AT THE RECRUITMENT EVENT:

Look out for the candidates who ask the sort of probing questions in the checklist above - because these are the ones you want to hire!

Why? Candidates who ask probing questions are trying to get beneath the surface, beyond the job description, in order to determine whether they will really fit in and find the role motivating and a good career move.

Ensure your stand is eye catching – use large colourful banners / visuals / videos / product samples, have printed materials and plenty of business cards to hand. You’ll also need somewhere to store and file any CVs you receive. It’s a good idea to include a space to add notes or observations from your interactions with any candidates.

Stand out. Literally. Don’t hide away behind your stand. Body language is key here, and coming out from behind the table makes you more approachable and friendly.  How you engage and interact with the delegates could make or break your recruitment success.

AFTER A RECRUITMENT EVENT:

Evaluate how the recruitment event went. Did you feel it was a success? How many candidates did you interact with? Were you able to answer their questions? How could you improve your performance ahead of the next recruitment event?

Lastly, don’t forget to follow up with the candidates that you met. Whether you think they’re right or wrong for your organisation, thanking them for coming along to talk to you and where possible giving constructive feedback will generate a positive buzz about your organisation and your recruitment techniques.

Recruitment events can be a fantastic way to attract and identify the next hire for your organisation. Make sure that you are fully prepared and ready to hire!
